We decided to add 2 feet of wall outside the 2nd floor house envelope to provide more privacy on the deck. Supporting posts for the roof on both the south and north sides are at the same spots as the support beams from the ground. Between the roof-support posts and the two feet of additional wall will be an open-air "window" on both ends of the deck that will match the height of the sliding glass doors for the house. The spaces between the posts and the edge of the deck will remain open, except for a 3-foot (or so) high barrier wall.
