We have been planning on choosing a white or slightly creamy off-white stucco (what you see now is the drainage mat, not the stucco). On a bright sunny day, the white will obviously be bright, but on a grey day it is much more subdued. So, we are comfortable with our choice at this point.
In preparing to stucco, dark-colored tar paper was first placed over the plywood frame. Now, the white drainage mat system is being installed. Once that is complete, stucco will be applied in a multi-stage process. The drainage mat system has a dark-colored fabric underneath. If/when water/moisture penetrates the stucco and the drainage mat to this fabric underneath, this dark-colored fabric (which looks a bit like mesh) channels the water via gravity down to the ground. At the bottom of the house, you will be able to cup your hand around the edge of the stucco. So there will be openings for moisture to drain out onto the ground. Some sort of "rain screen" or drainage mat system is considered absolutely necessary to make a stucco house viable in the wet winters of Seattle.
